Canoas is a municipality in the Rio Grande do Sul state in Brazil. It is a part of the conurbation called Porto Alegre and it is also the fourth largest city, by population, within the state. The economy of the city is based around manufacturing and it is also home to the Brazilian Air Force in the form of Canoas Air Force Base.
The city was probably founded in 1871 when the railway construction began to link up Porto Alegre with São Leopoldo. Since then it has gradually built up a number of industries including a very strong manufacturing sector.
Canoas lies towards the north of Porto Alegre and it is a great place to base your holiday from. You can hire a car in order to travel between the different areas of Porto Alegre, which you can book through VIP cars.
