The first recorded reference to habitation in the current site of Foggia was in 1000 AD. However, prior to this there were much early settlements nearby: first Neolithic one then a later Greekcolony. A local legend says that settlers found a panel depicting the Madonna in this site, so took as a sign that they should built there new city here.
By 1924 Foggia had developed into an important city and a key connecting point between Italy’s north and south. The importance of Foggia to the local economies was one reason why Allied forces boomed it in 1942 (the Second World War). Foggia was captured by British soldiers later in the war and the town become a chief stronghold on the Italian peninsula.
