This principate were ruled by the Malaspina and Cybo-Malaspina families. The country joined the Kingdom of Sardinia during the unification of Italy.
The palaces of the Malasapina and other notable families are key sites of note in Massa. The Malasapina family’s palace is o the top of a sizeable hill, allowing for a panoramic view of the city and nearby land. A Cathedral is also an important site, as are two well know plazas.
