The airport at Lazaro Cardenas handles air transportation within the region. It is a small facility airport served by connecting and commuter airlines such as Aeromar and Aeromexico Connect. To get to most destinations, a transfer at Mexico City would be required. Lazaro Cardenas was original called Los Llanitos, but changed its name to honour a politician from the area who became President of Mexico. Lazaro Cardenas itself is a busy deep water port and transportation hub. Tourism is not big in this town; most people go to the nearby resorts or many other cities and attractions within the state of Michoacan.
