Santarem is a city establishing the heart of the Santarem Municipality in Portugal. It is the capital of Santarem District. Santarem city positions on a plateau on the right bank of the River Tagus around 65 km northeast from Lisbon. Santarem has a scenic downtown with many monuments including the biggest and most wide-rangingensemble of gothic churches in Portugal. Situated on a high slopeover the Tagus Riverand the adjoining landscape, the location of the old castle of Santarem is now a wonderful garden that offers outstanding views. Church of Saint John of Alporao is a fine example of transitional architecture. Cabacas Tower is an ancient defensive tower of the medieval wall of the city. Church of Marvila is the 16th century church with nice portal and primary chapel in Manuline style.
