Galashiels is a burgh in the Scottish Borders, on the banks of the Gala Water River. Often shortened to Gala, the area is known for textile making. There is an interesting ancient earthwork near the town, which is called Picts’ Work Ditch. At Torwoodle you will find an Iron Age hill fort. Buckholm Tower is a prominent feature of Galashiels, and it dates back to around 1582.
Every summer the area celebrates being granted Burgh status with an event known as Braw Lads Gathering, which sees riders on horseback galloping through the town. Featuring in two of Robert Burns’ poems, Galashiels is a major transport hub. In the town, the Glasite Church is an interesting site, squeezed between shops and mill buildings.
