The downtown began as the local market for farmers. Throughout the 1970s, though, the economic centre moves to a new location in the city, leaving the core to small vendors of knickknacks. This left the downtown neglected and by 1980s Council realized action was needed to restore this meeting place. They started a program of revitalization that continues today.
