Barbacena is a town in the Minas Gerais state in the south west of the country. It lies in the Serra da Mantiqueira foothills to the south of Belo Horizonte, the state capital. The town is well connected by road as it lies on the BR-040 highway, which links Rio de Janeiro to Brasilia. The climate is slightly more variable than other locations in Brazil due to its elevation and winters will see drops in temperature down to around 13°C. This cooler climate makes the area ideal for growing flowers, and for this reason the town has been given the nickname of 'City of Roses’.
