Campo Grande means 'Great Field’ and it is the state capital of MatoGrosso do Sul in the western central region of the country. The city also has the nickname of CidadeMorena due to the colour of the soil in the region being a reddish-brown colour. The city was originally nothing more than a waypoint for people travelling from São Paulo to MatoGrosso over land.
The city had small beginnings in the form of the village, which was established in Santo Antônio do Campo Grande, but as it grew the name was shortened to its modern form.
