Erechim was one of the first planned cities in Brazil and was created, on paper at least, in 1918. The designs of the city were based on Paris and Washington DC, but the planners had not taken into account the hilly nature of Erechim. It took a long time, but the hills were eventually levelled into the Avenue Maurício Cardoso. Despite many plans to further level the area most never occurred and modern Erechim still retains many of its original hills with old cobbled streets.

There are a number of major roads passing through Erechim, which you can use to explore both Erechim itself and the immediate surrounding areas, or you can venture further afield to places such as Concórdia or Chapecó to the north or Passo-Fundo to the south. You can hire a car through VIP cars in order to explore the region fully.
