Feira de Santana is a city in the state of Bahia in Brazil. It is found to the north west of Salvador and the name of the city means 'Saint Anne’s Market’. The city has a number of nicknames, starting with princesa do sertão, or Princess of the Back Country. The location of the city, in a region separating the wet zones from the arid areas, has also led to it being called the 'Gateway to the Back Country’.

The city grew up around the traders and voyagers who stopped in the location on their way from the highlands of Brazil on their way to the lower lying areas. Therefore the city also developed markets, including cattle markets. The city developed with wide streets and a spacious feel and so began to attract many people to live in the area.
