Syros, also known as Siros, is a Greek Island located in the Aegean Sea. Part of the Cyclades group, this island is off the usual tourist track but is the place to go to experience authentic Greek culture. It is situated around 144 km southeast of Athens and its capital Ermoupolis is also the capital of the South Aegean region. The northern towns such as Ano Syros, Vari and Poseidonia have beautiful beaches and are also significant tourist attractions.
Ermoupolis is full of charming neo-classical buildings and has a pretty harbor from where travelers can enjoy the sea view. The Catholic basilica of San Giorgio in the town of Ano Syros is also worth visiting. Other places to visit are the Plateia Miaouli public plaza and the Ermoupolis City Hall.
