Gela is a town located in the Caltanissetta Province on the south coast of Sicily. The town lies to the south of the provincial capital of Caltanissetta and sits on the edge of the Mediterranean Sea. The town was founded in around 688 BC, not long after Syracuse was founded, on the Gela river estuary. There are many things to see in the town, including the Akropolis and the archaeological site, Capo Soprano. There are also a number of Greek temples to be investigated. A short distance from Gela is the Natural Reserve of Biviere di Gela, which is a dune surrounded coastal lake, home to many different types of marine animals.
