Casale Monferrato is a town located in the Alessandria Province in the Piedmont region of Italy. It is in the far north west of the country around 60 km to the east of Turin on the bank of the Po River. Across the river are Monferrato hills and the vast Po Valley. The town has existed since it was a Gaulish settlement, but it did not rise to any sort of prominence until the Romans took over and developed it. The centre of the town contains many historical buildings and features the Piazza Mazzini at its focus. In the middle of the Piazza is a beautiful equestrian statue from 1843.
