Legnano is a town in Italy's far north western part of the Province of Milan, crossed by the Olona River. The earliest settlement of the region was by a prehistoric people, the Culture of Remedello, between the nineteen and twenty-first centuries BC. Later, a Celtic tribe dwelled in the area, before being absorbed by the Romans.

Other than Rome, Legnano is the only city mentioned in the Italian National Anthem. It merits this honor due to the importance of the Battle of Legnano in the history of Italy. This was the battle where the Holy Roman Emperor, Frederick Barbarossa was defeated by the Lombard League (a collaboration of cities that swore to defend each other against Barbarossa).
