Le Morne is on a peninsula at the very south-western tip of Mauritius. It has a large monolith at its centre and there are many caves and overhangs on the steeply inclined slopes.

It is almost fully surrounded by a sparkling lagoon, and is a very popular tourist attraction. Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it was used by runaway slaves for shelter. Escaped slaves formed small settlements in the caves and on the summit of Le Morne Mountain. This has made Le Morne a symbol of the long fight for freedom, the suffering of slaves and indentures, and their sacrifices.

Other activities in the area include kite-surfing, deep-sea fishing, paragliding and sailing. There is a white beach, proclaimed to be one of the best on the island. Sunsets are magical, seeing the mountain silhouetted against the shimmering waters.
