Lázaro Cárdenas is a busy port city on the coast of Michoacán. The city was originally named Los LLanitos; it changed its name in honour of a Michoacán born politician who became President of Mexico from 1934 to 1940. The city is an industrial centre and busy port town, but not a major tourist destination.
Large number tourists prefer to stop at Lázaro Cárdenas before continuing on to the seaside resorts along the Michoacáncoastline. The sea resorts are popular with Mexicans for their sandy beaches.
