Luderitz lies in a harbour that is located in the south west of Namibia. The harbour town was founded in 1883 and evolved around Robert Harbour. This area of coast is one of the least hospitable for humans in Africa, but thanks to the diamond industry and a variety of historical attractions the town continues to prosper.Transport to the area is limited and so it is highly advisable to hire a car in order to get around and make the most of your visit to Luderitz. In this way you can explore the newly developed waterfront area that is populated with shops. Just outside Luderitz is Kolmanskop, a ghost town that became prosperous during the diamond rush but now lies abandoned and is constantly under threat of being buried by the Namib Desert sand dunes.
