Maia is a city located in northern Portugal in Maia Municipality. Maia includes the parishes of Gueifaes, Vermoim, and Maia. In 1902, Maia got the status of Vila. Maia was awarded city status on August 23, 1986. Maia is the birthplace of two major sports organizations- the cycling team Uniao Ciclista da Maia and the football club FC Maia. Maia Municipality is one of the most industrialized in the Norte Region. Amongst its industries is Sonae Industria, a foremost wood-based products company. The Porto International Airport, Francisco Sa Carneiro Airport is situated in the parish of Moreira in Pedras Rubras. The municipality is served by Metro do Porto.
