Gorseinon is a town in the south west part of Wales and is county of Swansea. It is near the Loughor estuary. It was a small village until the late 19th century. It then grew around the coal mining and tinplate industries.
Local legend says that in the past there were two princes. These princes are said to have lived in the year 991. They were the Prince of South Wales, Prince Ithol, and the Prince of Glamorgan, Price Meredith. There was a battle on Garngoch Common and the Prince of Glamorgan was victorious. One fighter was called Einon Hywell, with Einon meaning “leader”. After the battle he and his men camped on the Gorse. The name Gorseynon was created by combining the names, and it was subsequently changed to its present form of Gorseinon. There are many public houses in the area today.
