A town in northwest Kent, Gravesend is on the banks of the River Thames. Its location has meant it has always had an important role in the history and communications in this area of the country. The town is home to an international railway station. Stone Age implements have been found in Graveshead, as well as evidence of an Iron Age settlement and Roman remains.
In the Fort Gardens one will find Milton Chantry, Gravesend's earliest extant building. It dates from the late 13th century. Gravesend has one of the oldest surviving markets in the country. On the river front are the archaeological remains of a riverside fort built on the orders of Henry VIII. Things to see also include the pier, which is the oldest cast iron pier surviving today in the entire world, the Royal Terrace Pier, the Gravesend Clock Tower, Windmill Hill, the Pocahontas Statue, and various places of worship.
