Guildford is located in the English county of Surrey. Surrey’s only cathedral is found in Guildford, as is the University of Surrey. The Norman design Guildford Castle is a popular tourist attraction in the town. It looks over the pass taken through the hills by historic pilgrims, known as Pilgrims’ Way.
William the Conqueror was in Guildford after he won at the Battle of Hastings. In 1995, a chamber was discovered in the High Street, which is considered to be the remains of the 12th century Guildford Synagogue. If it is, it is likely to be oldest remains of a synagogue in western Europe. Guildford’s Guildhall is a pretty building, and the art gallery is incredibly popular, seeing many visitors every month. The town centre is a lively area, with many stores, restaurants and bars. There is a street market every Friday and Saturday, and a monthly farmers’ market.
