Twinned with Kemi in Finland, Newtownards is a large town in the Northern Ireland area of County Down. It is situated at the most northern tip of Strangford Lough. It is a short distance from the capital of Belfast. The local name for the town is Ards. Newtownards is overlooked by the soaring Scrabo Tower. The tower was set up as a memorial to Charles Stewart, the 3rd Marquess of Londonderry, because of his care and concern for his tenants during the historic potato famine. There are many nice woodland walks nearby. Somme Heritage Centre is an added attraction to visit in the town. Kids will like the Ark Open Farm, with its selection of rare and endangered cattle, sheep, pigs and farmyard birds. Mount Stewart is an 18th-century house and garden.
