Kil is a municipality in Varmland County in west central Sweden. Its seat of government is located in the town of the same name. In 1971, the local government merged Stora Kil, Jarnskog and a part of Brunskog into a municipality that is Kil today. The name Kil means wedge, crack or similar in Swedish, referring to an old Swedish bay by the small lake Hyn where the church was constructed. The town later on became the seat of the juridical Kil Hundred, which isidentified to have survived in 1426. The wedge is noted in the coat of arms.
