Augusta is a town in the Syracuse Province on the east coast of Sicily. Augusta provides one of the main harbours used in Italy, particularly for industrial shipping. The city lies on the coast of the Ionian Sea and the old town is actually an island, which was made during the 16th century when an isthmus was cut and the resulting island was then reconnected to the mainland by two bridges. Augusta has a huge number of buildings and monuments within the city, as well as the port area, to explore. However it is also a great place to base a holiday from as there is good road access close by in the form of the A18, which will take you south to Syracuse or north to Catania.
