Avellino is a town in the Campania region in the south west of Italy. It lies on a plain that is surrounded by mountains and is only 42 km from Naples. The town has ancient origins as it was originally inhabited by the Samnite Hirpini. Ancient ruins from the original town can be seen to the east of the present day town. Avellino lies on the A16, providing connections to the east and west of the town. There is no rail station in Avellino so car rental is the best way of getting around. You are then free to take in some of the sights that Avellino has to offer in the form of some fantastic buildings, including the cathedral with its Romanesque crypt and the Piazza Castello where the Lombard Castle remains are situated.
