Located in southwest Germany, Menden is a town in North Rhine –Westphalia, part of the district of Märkischer Kreis. The first cathedrals of the region were built in the 9th century, and development continued in the 1100 to 1200s when the city was annexed by different regional powers. Today it is a small town with a strong cultural presence in the form of festivals and the arts. Menden starts its new year with a carnival that features local dance groups showing their skills in the annual parade. The Lendringser Frühling continues the festivals with vendor stalls and exhibitors selling local wares and artisan products.
