Oberhausen is located between Essen and Duisburg on the Emscher river. The city was named after its old railway station in the 19th century, and it eventually became a town in 1874. It housed several coal mines and steel mines, which were ultimately closed down in the 1990’s. Today, the city is famous for hosting the International Short Film Festival, an event that has become synonymous with the town since 1954. Other than that, this city also holds the shrine of Paul the Octopus in the Sea Life Center.
Oberhausen is divided into 4 city centers. The new city center especially has emerged as a shopping mall with its plethora of shops and malls. The city isn't usually crowded, given that most of the residential areas have little to medium population concentration.
