While the region of Matera has likely existed since the paleolithic age, the first settlement was of the Romans. The Romans called the city Matheola after a famous general of the time. In 664 the Lombards conquered the city and it became part of the Duchy of Benevento. During the ninth and tenth centuries, the area was almost constant war between the Byzantine and Germanic emperors.
One of the main sites of Matera is the ancient town (Sasseni), a paleolithic colony. Experts believe this may be one of the first human settlements on the peninsula, and thus it has become recognized world wise for its importance. Churches, made from soft volcanic rock in the region, are similarly important and worth seeing. These churches are different from those of the rest of Italy.
