Messagne is an old settlement whose importance derived from its prime location along the Apian way. Tradition holds that the city’s name comes from the Messapi tribe who inhabited the region prior to the roman conquest. The Messapi called the area Mesania or Metania, referring to its position halfway between two important local cities.
