Coatzacoalcos is a port city in the south of Veracruz State and the administrative centre for the surrounding municipality of Coatzacoalcos. The region was central to the Olmec, one of the pre-Columbian tribes that inhabited Mexico. The city’s name means, roughly, 'where the snake hides’, referring to Quetzalcoatl, the serpent god made his final journey to the sea in this area. The key attraction in this town is the Olmec temples and accompanying archaeological museums.
