Santarém is a city, municipality and district of the Centro region of Portugal. This city is located on the right bank of the River Tagus, and at a distance of 65 km's from the capital city, Lisbon. Santarém is known as the bull-fighting capital of Portugal and its surrounding regions are filled with pastures for grazing bulls and horses. The picturesque town center of this city is also renowned for its historical monuments and many Gothic style churches.

The Old Castle of Santarém is still partially preserved and is located on a high slope near the river, giving spectacular views of the city. The Church of Saint John of Alporão was built in the 12th century and is an example of transitional architecture with Gothic, Romanesque and Arab influences. Other popular attractions here are the Cabaças Tower, Cathedral of Santarém, Church of the Holy Miracle, and the Igreja da Graça.
