Banská Bystrica is a Slovakian city located in the centre of the country. The city sits by the side of the Hron River in a wide valley that is encircled by a number of mountain chains including the Low Tatras, the Kremnica Mountains and also the Vel’ká Fatra.

Within the city are the beautiful buildings that date from the Late Middle Ages when the gold mining industry provided the wealth for such architectural endeavours. The City Castle is the oldest part of the current city built in the 13th century and you can still see remnants of its original cemetery.
