The airport at Lazaro Cardenas handles air transportation within the region. It is a small facility airport served by connecting and commuter airlines such as Aeromar and Aeromexico Connect. To get to most destinations, a transfer at Mexico City would be required. Lazaro Cardenas was original called Los Llanitos, but changed its name to honour a politician from the area who became President of Mexico. Lazaro Cardenas itself is a busy deep water port and transportation hub. Tourism is not big in this town; most people go to the nearby resorts or many other cities and attractions within the state of Michoacan. To get around Lazaro Cardenas and the surrounding area, you are best advised to rent a car from VIP Cars.
