Dropping off your rental car on the Swiss side of Geneva Airport is a straightforward process. As you approach the airport, merge onto the A1 motorway and follow the clear overhead signs directing you toward "Car Rental Return" (Parking P51).
Once inside P51, follow the designated lanes marked for your specific rental supplier. You will park the vehicle directly in their designated return lot, where an on-site attendant will typically inspect the car, log the fuel level and close out your rental contract right there.
You do not need to walk back to the main terminal check-in desks unless you are returning the vehicle outside of regular operating hours.
Note: If you land on a domestic flight into the airport's French side but booked your car on the Swiss side, then follow these steps:
Collect your luggage first, follow the terminal signs to walk across the indoor border checkpoint into the Swiss International Sector to reach your rental desk.

VIP Cars’ tips for car hire at Geneva Airport (GVA)
- If you are travelling to Chamonix, Verbier, Morzine, Courchevel and Zermatt region, make sure to book SUVs and 4x4 vehicles for better grip and stability.
- Many suppliers at GVA often provide car rentals equipped with winter tyres during colder months, but it is always best to confirm this before finalising your reservation.
- One-way rentals are the most booked deals during winter when visitors fly into Geneva and continue directly to ski resorts without needing to return to the airport. It is therefore recommended to reserve your vehicle early.
- Most rental cars picked up on the Swiss side already include the mandatory Swiss motorway vignette required for highways. However, if you rent from the French side and drive into Switzerland, verify whether the vignette is included to avoid fines.
- Before collecting your car, confirm international driving permissions, check mileage policies, ask about snow chains if visiting high-altitude ski resorts and verify insurance coverage for France, Italy or other neighbouring countries.
