Giardini Di Naxos was established by Thucles the Chalcidiani in the 8th Century BC. Unlike many early towns, it was never a powerful town. However, as home to a temple to Athena, the patron goddess of the Greek Colonies, Giardini di Naxos had a certain amount of religious prestige and importance. The cities of Catatonia and Leontini were established by colonists from Giardini di Naxos. Before the 1970s, this small commune was a quiet fishing village. However, it has become a well-known seaside resort town, with renowned beaches, panoramic views of the bay and the fishing port which is small but active. In the summer, Especially July and August, the beaches and public swimming pools (lidos) are quite crowded.
