Located about 16 miles west of Riga, Jurmala is one of the leading resort towns of Latvia. Sandwiched between the Lielupe River and the Gulf of Riga, the resort town is famous for its white sand stretch that is spread across 21 miles. The large accessible beach area is a wonderful place to enjoy variety of water sports as well as other activities. From volleyball courts to small football fields, there are plenty of dedicated playing areas on the beach.
The Soviet era wooden houses are another fascinating factor for tourists. Constructed in the 19th and the 20th century, the wooden houses remain an important architectural marvel. While majority of the buildings were designed and built by Latvian and Baltic German architects, significant contribution of Finnish and Russian architects is well recorded. In addition to wooden structures, Jurmala takes pride in its huge wealth of other monuments. There are more than 400 listed historic buildings as well.
