Erfurt is the capital city of Thuringia. The city lies in the southern part of the Thuringian Basin within the wide valley of Gera River. Erfurt lies near to the geographical centre of Germany, thus making it an important city and transport hub.

Other famous attractions are the Krämerbrücke, a bridge completely covered with dwellings, and the oldest Synagogue still standing in Europe, established in 11th century. Furthermore, Erfurt consists of old timber-framed houses and about 25 gothic churches.
