Vercelli is a small city in the Piedmont region of Italy. According to historians, it was founded around 600 BC, making it one of the oldest inhabited centers in northern Italy. The city is located on the Po’s plain, along the banks of the Sesina River. The first publically funded university was built in this city in 1228, but closed in 1372. A newer university specializing in Literature exists in the city today.
Each year, the Votti International Music Competition is held in Vercelli. This is primarily dedicated to Piano and Opera, but sections for many instruments (Mostly, but not exclusively orchestral) also exist. Dance and composition competition are other features of this event. Many winners have since achieved international fame and recognition.
