This coastal city is known for its seaport, large industrial area, and heritage. Setubal has always been an important area for the fishing industry, especially sardines, and is also known for its cuisine, in particular the sea food.

Setubal has many attractions for travelers to visit. The Monastery of Jesus of Setúbal is the most important landmark here, and is one of the first buildings built in Portuguese Manueline style. The convent next to this monastery has beem converted into an art museum which houses important artwork dating from the 15th century onwards. Other attractions here include Igreja de São Julião, and the Castelo de São Filipe, a 16th century fortress located on the banks of the Sado River,overseeing the city.
