Syracuse is a famous Italian town with a Grecian Heart. This city was founded by early Corinthians and other Greek colonists. The structures of these earliest settlers are still visible today: theatres, amphitheatres and Temples. A must see is the Cathedral. This ancient building was originally a temple dedicated to the Goddess Athena. It was converted into a cathedral by Christians in the early years of the religion. Today much of the temple remains, and visitors can see elements of the original temple and later renovated cathedral. Ortygia, a nearby Island colonized by the Greeks, and the nature reserve nearby provide opportunities to admire the rugged landscape of Syracuse and surrounding area. If you are not claustrophobic, the caverns once used by followers of Dionysus are interesting expeditions.
