The first reference to this ancient city is during the reign of Caesar Augustus, who led the city in 49 BC. Caesar August fortified the town and expanded it. The defensive wall can still be seen today.

Sites worth seeing in this town include the aforementioned roman wall (The Arco D’ Augustus), a grand hall most likely constructed around 1357. The Civic Museum displays the city’s history from the roman times through to the present.
