The Algueirão part of the name comes from the Arab presence in the area who called this region 'al-gueirān' meaning 'the caves'.

The Pena National Palace is the main attraction here and has been classified as one of the 'Seven Wonders of Portugal'. Sintra National Palace is another prominent landmark here and is one of the best preserved medieval royal palaces in the country. Other attractions here include Castle of the Moors, the Águas Livres Aqueduct and Queluz National Park.
