This city is today mostly known for the 'Lines of Torres Vedras'- a series of fortifications built in the area to defend Lisbon. These lines consist of 152 forts and 628 redoubts, making them one of the most extensive military fortifications in the country.
Torres Vedras has a number of attractions for travelers to visit. The Castle of Torres Vedras dates back to the Moorish times, and is one of the most visited landmarks here. The Hill Forts peppered around the region as a part of the 'Lines of Torres Vedras' are other prominent attractions here. Other attractions here include the ruins of the Alcaides Palace, the Santa Maria do Castelo Church, the Nossa Senhora da Nazaré, and the 16th century Graça Convent which now houses the Municipal Museum.
