Nitra is situated in western Slovakia in the valley of the river Nitra and also at the foot of Zobor Mountain. Nitra is also counted amongst the oldest cities in Slovakia as it has been inhabited for around the last 6000 years. Within the city are numerous historic buildings, but perhaps the most interesting building is Nitra Castle, which contains St. Emmeram’s Cathedral in the Staré Mesto. Archaeological investigations indicate that there have been several other buildings on this site, starting with a large fortified castle back in the 7th century.

You can also climb Zobor, which is actually a limestone hill rather than a mountain, to see some great views and also the remains of an ancient castle.
