Pantelleria is the site of a settlement dating back over 30,000 years. After a period, where the original settlers of Iberian of Ibero-Ligurian origin, were segregated from most of Europe, the Carthagians conquered the area. Rome had intermittent control over the area, where it served as a place to which high ranking family members were exiled.
