Elvas is a city and municipality in Alentejo region of Portugal. Located next to the border with Spain, this frontier town is located 15 km's west of the Spanish fortress of Badajoz. This city has historically been an important town and its extensive fortifications and military architecture have earned them the status of World Heritage Site under the name of 'Garrison Border Town of Elvas and its Fortifications'.

The Fortifications are the most visited site in the city and include the largest bulwarked dry ditch system in the world. Within the walls there are military building, barracks, along with churches and monasteries. The Amoreira Aqueduct is a 6 km long watercourse built to enable the city to withstand lengthy sieges. The Castle of Elvas is an important building here built between the 8th and 11th centuries and forms the city's first line of defense in Portuguese Alentejo.
