Koper is a town that sits on the tiny expanse of Slovenian coastline. With only 5km separating it from the Italian border it has unsurprising Italian influences to be found within its walls. The Praetorian Palace is perhaps the best example of this with two 13th century houses being adapted and renovated in a Venetial style palace in the 15th century. If you rent a car you can take in many of the sights and sounds of the town before deciding on a specific itinerary.

The town also boasts the largest cathedral in Slovenia. It is the Cathedral of the Assumption. It dates from the latter half of the 12th century and it is home to one of the oldest bells in Slovenia. The bell originated in Venice and is dated 1333. The upper terrace provides lovely views of the Bay of Trieste and gives access to the Sacra Conversatione painting.
