Altamira is a Brazilian city in Pará in the north of the country. Altamira is the second largest city in the world, second only to Jiuqian, China. If the city were actually a country, it would actually be bigger than the country of Greece. Within the municipality there is one of the largest engineering projects in the world going on in the form of the building of the Belo Monte Dam.

Altamira has been built in the region where the highlands in Brazil transition into the Amazonian lowlands. The city does not sit along the Amazon itself, but along one of its tributaries, the Xingu River.
