Gramado is a small tourist town located in the Rio Grande do Sul state in the south of the country. It lies to the east of Caxias do Sul in the region of Serra Gaúcha region. The town was originally founded by Azorean people from Portugal in 1875, but there were also later influxes of German and Italian immigrants, all of who shaped the look and feel of the city. The town sits nestles in the Serra Gaúchamountains and is home to a number of open spaces popular with tourists. The best known of these areas is the Black Lake. The lake is actually man-made and was created by Leopoldo Rosenfeld after the forest covering the area was destroyed by fire.
